Role and background

HMP Barlinnie in Riddrie, Glasgow, receives men from courts across the west of Scotland. Its population includes people awaiting trial and men serving sentences of different lengths, giving it a wider role than a prison dedicated to one sentence category.

Remand and convicted custody are legally different. Someone held while awaiting trial has not been convicted of the charge for which they are on remand. A sentenced prisoner is serving the punishment imposed after conviction. Barlinnie's population includes both groups.

Alongside its receiving function, the establishment has a national top-end facility. This accommodates selected long-term and life-sentence prisoners approaching a possible release date. Approaching consideration for release does not mean release is automatic.

Barlinnie's significance lies in these overlapping responsibilities: taking people directly from court, holding men during criminal proceedings and accommodating prisoners at later stages of long sentences. A single description of it as simply a local jail misses that range.

Visiting and family contact

Family visits are arranged differently for convicted and remand prisoners. Convicted men book visits and inform their families, while relatives arrange remand visits through the booking service. Visitors need to check current identification and booking requirements before travelling to Lee Avenue.
