Inside the prison and daily life
Maghaberry is a high-security prison for adult men at Ballinderry Upper near Lisburn. It holds both sentenced and unsentenced prisoners and operates with integrated and separated accommodation, making its responsibilities particularly varied within Northern Ireland's three-establishment prison estate.
Population pressure has affected how the site is used. During the 2024–25 reporting period, Foyle and Erne square houses reopened after previously closing when the newer Davis House accommodation came into use. That is a dated record of the estate's response to demand, rather than a live account of today's available places.
Role and background
Its receiving role means that a man held there may be awaiting trial rather than serving a sentence. Remand custody must be distinguished from conviction: being in a high-security establishment does not establish guilt or, by itself, explain an individual's assessed risk.
Maghaberry's role combines court-related custody, long-term imprisonment and the management of different residential populations. Understanding those separate responsibilities gives a clearer picture than describing it only by its security level.
Visiting and family contact
Families arrange visits through the booking system and must be registered with the prison. Visitor identification and security procedures apply. A visitors' welcome centre and family support service provide help for relatives, including those facing the practical difficulties of a first prison visit.
Practical advice before you make arrangements
Use Maghaberry's official page below for its current booking route, required identification, permitted items and travel instructions.
Confirm that the person is still at Maghaberry and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
