Role and background

HMP Prescoed is an open men's prison and young offender institution in Coed-y-Paen, South Wales, managed jointly with Usk.

Inside the prison and daily life

Its eleven accommodation blocks contain a mixture of single and shared rooms. The site has a library, dining facilities, barber shop, gym, sports hall and multi-faith chaplaincy.

Education includes English, Welsh, maths, computing, food safety and other work-related learning. Practical training covers areas such as bricklaying and barbering. Much of the prison's work is linked to nearby Cilwrgi Farm, with further activity in recycling and waste management.

Learning in Welsh as well as English reflects the prison's Welsh setting. Farm experience and waste-management courses provide practical routes alongside classroom subjects and qualifications in other trades.

Visiting and family contact

Assessed day or overnight release can support family contact, community ties and preparation for leaving custody. Prescoed's open-prison role makes progression towards independent responsibility central to understanding the establishment, while joint management with Usk does not make the two prisons interchangeable.

Families should check visiting times, booking procedures, identification rules and support for children or disabled visitors before travelling. Those details can change. Understanding the establishment's role is useful, but it does not replace confirming the arrangements for a particular visit.

Practical advice before you make arrangements

Use Prescoed's official page below for its current booking route, required identification, permitted items and travel instructions.

Confirm that the person is still at Prescoed and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.

Community work or temporary release depends on individual approval and risk assessment; the establishment's open or community setting does not remove custody rules.
