Usk

Inside the prison and daily life

Usk is a men's prison in the town of Usk, South Wales, managed jointly with Prescoed Prison. Shared management should not obscure the fact that they are separate establishments. Usk's main accommodation includes shared cells across three wings and a separate dormitory-style unit for prisoners on enhanced privileges.

Cells have televisions and telephones. Indoor and outdoor fitness facilities and a multi-faith chaplaincy form part of the provision. The prison's layout and services are relevant to daily life, but do not by themselves establish how individual prisoners experience custody.

Education covers literacy, numeracy, computing and employability, with routes to higher qualifications. Other subjects include health and safety, food safety, wellbeing, business studies and woodcraft. Work is available in prison services and industrial workshops, and accredited offending behaviour programmes are also offered.

Visiting and family contact

New arrivals receive an induction covering health, support and rules, including how contact and visits work. Family services are provided by Invisible Walls. An explanation of Usk therefore brings together its accommodation, learning and work with the relationships and practical support needed during imprisonment.

Anyone arranging a visit should check the latest booking rules, identification requirements and accessibility arrangements before travelling. Education and work described here are provision offered, rather than a guarantee of individual access or outcomes.

Practical advice before you make arrangements

Use Usk's official page below for its current booking route, required identification, permitted items and travel instructions.

Confirm that the person is still at Usk and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
