Role and background
HMP Glenochil at Tullibody in Clackmannanshire accommodates convicted adult men. Unlike a local receiving prison, it does not take people directly from court: men arrive through transfer from other Scottish prisons after conviction.
Its population includes short-term and long-term prisoners, people serving life sentences and those subject to an Order for Lifelong Restriction. It is also one of the principal Scottish establishments managing men convicted of sexual offences.
The prison gives priority to the Forth Valley and Fife areas, while its specialist responsibilities extend beyond a simple geographical catchment. That combination means the reasons for a transfer may involve both where a person comes from and the type of custodial provision they need.
Glenochil has been extensively rebuilt. Its current role is consequently better understood through the population it manages and its place in the transfer system than through assumptions based on older descriptions of the site.
Visiting and family contact
Family contact operates through booked visits and identification checks. Visitors should confirm the current arrangements with the establishment before travelling to King O Muir Road. The fact that someone has transferred to Glenochil establishes a change of custodial location; it does not, by itself, establish a new conviction, a new sentence or an approaching release date.
Practical advice before you make arrangements
Use Glenochil's official page below for its current booking route, required identification, permitted items and travel instructions.
Confirm that the person is still at Glenochil and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
