Inside the prison and daily life

HMP and YOI Grampian opened in March 2014 on South Road in Peterhead. It was developed as Scotland's first purpose-built community-facing prison, with provision for more than 500 people and accommodation for both adult men and adult women from the north of Scotland.

The establishment's title includes a young offender institution, but that title alone should not be used to assume the age, legal status or sentence of a particular person. Its published description expressly identifies adult male and female accommodation.

Grampian represents a modern regional model within the Scottish estate. Its opening date, mixed adult accommodation and northern catchment distinguish it from an older local prison built principally to receive a single area's court population.

Visiting and family contact

That regional function is important. A prison can serve a wide area even when it stands in one town, and the needs of the people held there and the families visiting them extend beyond its immediate neighbourhood.

Visits, correspondence and family contact are managed through the prison's own arrangements. Before travelling, families need to check the current booking process, the identification required and the instructions applying to their visit. The prison has a dedicated family contact service for questions about maintaining contact.

Practical advice before you make arrangements

Use Grampian's official page below for its current booking route, required identification, permitted items and travel instructions.

Confirm that the person is still at Grampian and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
