Role and background

HMP Kilmarnock is a 500-cell establishment about three miles south-east of Hurlford in East Ayrshire. It acts as a local receiving prison, primarily taking people from the sheriff courts at Ayr and Kilmarnock, and accommodates a range of prisoner groups.

Its management changed on 17 March 2024. A contract under which Serco operated the prison ended, and operation transferred to the Scottish Prison Service. Older material describing Kilmarnock as privately operated therefore needs to be read in its historical context.

As a receiving establishment, Kilmarnock has an immediate connection with court business in its area. Its role is broader than that of an open prison focused on selected men approaching release, and a person's arrival there does not by itself describe the stage or outcome of their case.

Inside the prison and daily life

The 500-cell figure describes accommodation, rather than proving the number of prisoners present on a particular day. Cell totals and live population figures are different measures and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Visiting and family contact

Families use booked visiting arrangements and must meet identification requirements. The prison's visitors' centre also handles approved property within its published procedures. Anyone planning a visit should check the current instructions rather than relying on arrangements from before the change of operator.

Practical advice before you make arrangements

Use Kilmarnock's official page below for its current booking route, required identification, permitted items and travel instructions.

Confirm that the person is still at Kilmarnock and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
