Role and background

HMP Low Moss in Bishopbriggs opened in March 2012. It manages men on remand and men serving short, long and life sentences, as well as those subject to an Order for Lifelong Restriction, primarily from the North Strathclyde area.

The prison's responsibilities therefore extend from holding people during criminal proceedings to managing substantial periods of sentenced custody. A remand placement must be distinguished from a conviction, and the same establishment can hold people at very different legal stages.

Inside the prison and daily life

One of its facilities is a links centre addressing practical issues connected with release. Employment, housing, social work and throughcare support are among the areas covered. These services sit alongside provision aimed at addressing offending and helping people return to the community.

Family work includes support for fathers and families with children aged up to five through programmes delivered with Early Years Scotland. This is a distinct part of the prison's family provision, rather than a description of the whole population's experience.

Visiting and family contact

Visits are booked and visitors must meet identification requirements. For relatives travelling to Crosshill Road, checking the current arrangements is an essential part of planning a visit. Low Moss's role combines secure custody with practical work on the problems that can arise when someone leaves prison.
