Role and background

HMP and YOI Polmont is Scotland's national prison facility for young men aged 18 to 21. Its current population is broader than the familiar description of a young offender institution: it also accommodates adult men and adult women.

Young men can arrive directly from court on remand or after sentence, including short, long and life sentences. Adult men aged 21 and over serve short or long sentences, while adult women transfer from other establishments and can be on remand or convicted.

Those separate groups matter when describing the prison. The presence of young adults does not mean everyone inside is a child, and being held on remand does not establish guilt. Polmont's name alone cannot explain an individual prisoner's legal status.

The site's institutional history began as a borstal in 1911. Before that, its buildings housed Blairlodge Academy, a boarding school established in 1843 which closed in 1908. The Prison Commissioners subsequently purchased the buildings.

Visiting and family contact

Family visits are organised through the establishment with identification requirements. Polmont's mix of ages, legal stages and populations makes accurate descriptions particularly important: accounts based solely on its older young-offender identity can miss how its role has changed.
