Role and background

HMP Shotts stands in the countryside near the Lanarkshire village of Shotts, south of the M8. It is Scotland's only prison dedicated solely to long-term adult male prisoners, giving it a different function from establishments taking a broad population directly from court.

The current prison was built in 2012 and has a stated capacity of 538. It replaced an earlier establishment built in 1978 for men serving sentences of four years or more. The distinction between the original prison and the present buildings matters when interpreting older photographs or descriptions.

That early-sentence function means a transfer to Shotts should not automatically be interpreted as a move towards release. Its responsibilities include helping men adjust to long periods of custody as well as managing continuing imprisonment.

Inside the prison and daily life

Accommodation includes two residential halls and the National Integration Centre. The centre holds around 60 men at the early stage of sentences of eight years or more, with a supportive regime intended to prepare them for later movement into mainstream prison accommodation.

Visiting and family contact

Families can obtain help through a visitors' centre managed by Getting Better Together. Visits require booking and suitable identification. Relatives should check current arrangements before travelling, particularly because Shotts serves prisoners whose family connections may be elsewhere in Scotland.

Practical advice before you make arrangements

Confirm that the person is still at Shotts and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
