The case

Daniel Khalife was a serving soldier when he collected sensitive information and communicated with Iranian contacts. Restricted material and messages recovered from devices formed part of the prosecution evidence.

Evidence and court findings

While remanded at HMP Wandsworth, he escaped beneath a food delivery vehicle in September 2023. Police caught him three days later. A jury convicted him of the spying-related offences, and he admitted escape.

The sentence

On 3 February 2025, the court imposed six years for the Official Secrets Act offence, a consecutive six-year term for obtaining armed-forces information, and two years and three months for escape. The judge adjusted the components for overall proportionality. The combined sentence was 14 years and three months, with different release provisions applying to its parts.
