The case
James McKenna took a kitchen knife to Carmarthen Park on 29 January 2026 and waited for his former partner while she walked her dog. He emerged and attacked her.
Evidence and court findings
The victim suffered injuries to her chest, arm and hand and received paramedic treatment. At trial, McKenna admitted taking the knife intending to hurt her, but denied attempted murder. The jury convicted him after hearing the evidence. He had pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a bladed article.
The sentence
Swansea Crown Court imposed 24 years’ imprisonment on 9 October 2026 and made an indefinite restraining order. The result distinguishes an intention to kill, proved by the prosecution, from his narrower account of intending injury.
