The case
Ian Claughton fitted properties with explosive devices and a homemade flamethrower in connection with a substantial drugs operation. Police searched three properties on Brierley Road, Barnsley, in May 2024.
Evidence and court findings
The investigation followed the interception of a shipment of imitation firearms from China. A jury convicted Claughton of ten offences involving weapons, explosives, drug production and criminal property. His partner Lesley was convicted of separate offences relating to her own involvement.
The sentence
Sheffield Crown Court sentenced Ian Claughton to seven years on 10 February 2026. Lesley Claughton received a 21-month sentence suspended for two years, so her outcome must not be described as immediate imprisonment. The case illustrates why individual sentencing outcomes matter even within a joint prosecution.
