The case

Robert Easom attacked his partner when she tried to end their relationship in February 2025. The assault broke her neck and caused permanent paralysis.

Evidence and court findings

The prosecution presented a history of coercive control and violence. Easom admitted other assaults and controlling or coercive behaviour but disputed intending the serious injury. A jury convicted him of grievous bodily harm with intent after considering his account and the evidence. The CPS said his initial explanations included a fall and playfighting.

The sentence

Preston Crown Court sentenced Easom on 27 February 2026 to 16 years in custody and a further four-year extended licence period. The extension is supervision after custody, not an additional four years described by the court as a prison term.
