Thomas Kwan jailed for attempted murder through a fake medical visit

A doctor used false appointment letters and a disguise to poison his mother’s partner.

The case

Thomas Kwan arranged a supposed medical appointment at the Newcastle home of his mother’s then partner. He used false letters and disguised himself so that the household would not recognise him.

Evidence and court findings

After the January 2024 injection, the victim became seriously unwell and needed repeated operations. Hospital staff recognised the appointment documents as bogus and alerted police. Investigators assembled evidence of Kwan’s planning and deception. He changed his plea to guilty during trial in October 2024.

The sentence

Newcastle Crown Court imposed 31 years and five months on 6 November 2024. The offence was attempted murder: the victim survived. This distinction matters when comparing the result with murder cases carrying mandatory life sentences.
