The case

Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe murdered 16-year-old Brianna Ghey in Linear Park, Warrington, on 11 February 2023. Both were children when they offended.

Evidence and court findings

The sentencing judge considered their planning, culpability, maturity and medical evidence separately. The court lifted restrictions on naming the defendants. Restrictions protecting other children remained, so this account does not identify them. Ratcliffe’s later sentence challenge did not replace the minimum term imposed at trial.

The sentence

On 2 February 2024, Manchester Crown Court imposed detention at His Majesty’s Pleasure, the life sentence for murder committed under 18. Jenkinson’s minimum was 22 years and Ratcliffe’s 20, each reduced for remand time. Release requires a favourable future Parole Board decision.

Sources and case status

The original life sentences are reported with the December 2024 Ratcliffe decision. Other children remain protected by reporting restrictions.
