Kian Bateman jailed for life for Shelley Davies’s murder

A Cardiff jury rejected a driving-only account after a car was deliberately used as a weapon.

The case

Kian Bateman deliberately drove at a group outside a club in Ely, Cardiff, in September 2025. Shelley Davies was on the ground after an altercation involving his brother.

Evidence and court findings

The car ran over Davies and seriously injured her partner. Davies died in October 2025. Bateman admitted dangerous-driving offences, but the prosecution proved murder and grievous bodily harm with intent. The jury found that the fatal driving was deliberate rather than accidental.

The sentence

On 3 July 2026, Cardiff Crown Court imposed life imprisonment with a 17-year minimum term. The court also disqualified him from driving and required an extended retest. His admitted driving offences did not prevent the jury reaching the more serious murder verdict on the evidence.
