The case
Sarah Ngaba received a life sentence for murdering her daughter Eliza. The assault took place in Telford in November 2019, when Eliza was seven weeks old.
Evidence and court findings
Ngaba had already received a 14-year sentence for grievous bodily harm with intent. Eliza later died in August 2022 following a respiratory infection. The murder jury heard medical evidence that the earlier injuries had left her so vulnerable that the infection became fatal. It rejected the defence case of infanticide and convicted Ngaba on 21 May 2026.
The sentence
Birmingham Crown Court imposed a minimum term of 19 years on 12 June 2026. The later murder proceedings concerned the consequences of the original assault, rather than a new attack.
