Jemma Mitchell: life sentence for Mee Kuen Chong’s murder

The court found that financial gain motivated a planned killing and subsequent concealment.

The case

Jemma Mitchell murdered Mee Kuen Chong, also known as Deborah Chong, on 11 June 2021. They had met through church, and Chong had offered financial help before withdrawing that offer.

Evidence and court findings

The sentencing judge found that Mitchell killed for gain. CCTV, travel evidence and a forged will were important parts of the case. Mitchell transported Chong’s body from London to Devon. The court treated the planning, Chong’s vulnerability and the handling of her body as aggravating features.

The sentence

Following a jury conviction, Mitchell received life imprisonment at the Old Bailey on 28 October 2022. The minimum term was 34 years before remand credit. The remarks make clear that release would depend on a later assessment of danger.
