Jordan McSweeney: the revised minimum term for Zara Aleena’s murder

An appeal reduced the minimum term to 33 years while preserving life imprisonment.

The case

Jordan McSweeney murdered Zara Aleena after sexually assaulting her in Ilford in the early hours of 26 June 2022. He pleaded guilty and initially received a life sentence with a 38-year minimum.

Evidence and court findings

The Court of Appeal examined how the sentencing judge had increased the statutory starting point and allowed credit for the guilty plea. It did not overturn the convictions or minimise the seriousness of the attack. It decided that the original minimum was manifestly excessive under the applicable framework.

The sentence

On 3 November 2023, the appeal court substituted a 33-year minimum. The life sentence continued. Reporting only the original 38-year figure would therefore omit a material change to the court result.
