Inside the prison and daily life
Altcourse is a men's prison in Liverpool whose work extends beyond holding people in custody. Its regime includes education, practical training, employment activity and support intended to prepare prisoners for life after release.
The prison is currently operated by Sodexo. Alongside prison custody staff, the operator runs facilities management and provides rehabilitation and resettlement programmes. Those responsibilities bring security, day-to-day living conditions and preparation for release within the same establishment.
Education and skills development form part of the prison's offer, together with vocational training, workshops and industrial activity. Offending behaviour programmes are also available. Their stated purpose is to help prisoners address behaviour and develop skills that can be used outside custody.
The prison also works with outside organisations and charities. These partnerships support its rehabilitation work, although the existence of a programme alone does not establish its results for every prisoner.
Visiting and family contact
Family contact is another part of prison life. Altcourse provides dedicated visitor information covering types of visits, opening arrangements and prohibited items. Anyone planning a visit should confirm the current booking and identification requirements before travelling.
Practical advice before you make arrangements
Use Altcourse's official page below for its current booking route, required identification, permitted items and travel instructions.
Confirm that the person is still at Altcourse and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
