Role and background
Aylesbury is an adult men's prison in Buckinghamshire. Although its older web address refers to a young offender institution, its current role is described as an adult male establishment.
Inside the prison and daily life
Most accommodation is in single cells, with some rooms designed for two people. Cells contain a toilet, sink and telephone. New arrivals receive an induction covering immediate welfare needs, prison rules, education and contact with family.
Learning ranges from English, maths and digital skills to barbering, customer service, warehousing and hospitality. Distance learning can provide a route to qualifications including GCSEs, A levels and degrees.
Practical activity includes bicycle repair, sign making, kitchen work, gardening, laundry and waste management. Radio and podcast production adds a different kind of workshop experience, while the library and reading support provide further learning opportunities.
Sport includes gym sessions, football and fitness classes. The prison does not offer release on temporary licence.
Visiting and family contact
Family and friends must follow the visit booking and identification rules. Support is available through the visitors centre, and arrangements should be checked before travelling.
