Inside the prison and daily life
Askham Grange is an open prison and young offender institution for women aged 18 and over at Askham Richard, near York. Its regime brings education, family relationships and preparation for employment into the final stages of custody.
Accommodation combines dormitories with single rooms. A separate mother and baby unit can accommodate women with children under 18 months old, with mothers and babies given their own accommodation.
Each woman develops an individual learning plan during induction. The opportunities include classroom study, vocational training and paid work placements in the community. This connects learning inside the prison with experience of working outside it.
Role and background
Women can apply for release on temporary licence. Approved periods outside custody can be used for work experience, maintaining family connections and preparing for release; an application does not automatically mean permission is granted.
The open setting still operates under prison rules, including controls on entry, belongings and contact.
Visiting and family contact
Family visits must be booked, with visitors on the approved list and carrying the required identification. The visitors centre provides support, and family days are arranged during the year.
Practical advice before you make arrangements
Use Askham Grange's official page below for its current booking route, required identification, permitted items and travel instructions.
Confirm that the person is still at Askham Grange and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
Community work or temporary release depends on individual approval and risk assessment; the establishment's open or community setting does not remove custody rules.
