Inside the prison and daily life
Bedford Prison stands in the centre of Bedford and holds prisoners aged 18 and over. Its published regime combines reception and welfare checks with education, work and support for the move back into the community.
On arrival, prisoners are offered food, a shower and clean clothing. Staff and healthcare workers assess immediate risks and wellbeing needs, while a first-night telephone call is subject to public protection restrictions.
Induction usually takes place on a designated unit over several days. It includes English and maths assessments, information about prison rules and an introduction to the services available inside.
Work and training opportunities include industrial cleaning, painting and decorating, production workshops, laundry and kitchen duties. Prisoners can also work towards physical education qualifications and develop independent living skills.
Visiting and family contact
Preparation for release includes help with housing, debt, health and family relationships. The visitors centre provides information and support for relatives through the prison's family services.
Visitors must be approved and book in advance. Identification, entry controls and permitted belongings should be checked before travelling, because these practical requirements are part of maintaining safe contact.
Practical advice before you make arrangements
Use Bedford's official page below for its current booking route, required identification, permitted items and travel instructions.
Confirm that the person is still at Bedford and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
