Inside the prison and daily life
Belmarsh is a men's prison with accommodation organised across four main units and additional high-security, healthcare and segregation facilities. Prisoners live in a mixture of single and shared cells.
The arrival process includes contact with family and checks on immediate health and wellbeing. A subsequent induction introduces prison rules, fire safety, contact arrangements and the education and support services available.
Prisoners can take part in education, workshops and gym activities. Resettlement work covers practical needs including accommodation, employment, training, benefits and debt. Family relationships and health are also part of that support.
Foreign national prisoners can access a support group and immigration advice. Services inside therefore address a range of circumstances rather than assuming everyone has the same needs or release arrangements.
Visiting and family contact
Family visits operate through a controlled booking process, with support available at the visitors centre. Parcels are generally restricted to exceptional circumstances, while approved suppliers provide routes for purchasing permitted items.
Role and background
Applications for temporary release are assessed individually under a strict framework. Availability in principle does not mean every prisoner is eligible.
Practical advice before you make arrangements
Use Belmarsh's official page below for its current booking route, required identification, permitted items and travel instructions.
Confirm that the person is still at Belmarsh and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
