Inside the prison and daily life
Birmingham Prison has 11 wings and a mixture of single and shared cells. Its accommodation includes a first-night centre and specialist provision for older prisoners.
New arrivals receive welfare checks and an induction covering rules, health, training and contact arrangements. The prison also has a library, gym and multi-faith chaplaincy.
Vocational learning includes bricklaying, plumbing, carpentry, painting and decorating, catering, industrial cleaning and forklift truck driving. Other courses cover basic skills, computing, business, barbering and creative subjects, with recognised qualifications available.
The prison's resettlement unit helps people address housing, benefits and employment. Advice services work alongside prison staff so that practical problems can be considered before release rather than left entirely to the day someone leaves custody.
Role and background
Some prisoners may qualify for release on temporary licence to gain work experience in the community. Eligibility must be assessed within the prison.
Visiting and family contact
Family services provide information and support through the visitors centre. Relatives should check approval, booking, identification and permitted belongings before travelling, as a prison visit requires preparation as well as an appointment.
Practical advice before you make arrangements
Use Birmingham's official page below for its current booking route, required identification, permitted items and travel instructions.
Confirm that the person is still at Birmingham and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
