Inside the prison and daily life
Brixton Prison is a men's establishment in Lambeth, south London. Its five residential wings sit alongside an education and employment regime that includes catering, painting and decorating, radio production and other practical skills.
The Clink restaurant is a distinctive feature. Prisoners work towards vocational qualifications in cooking, food service and cleaning while working in the public restaurant. The associated support continues after release, including help with employment and accommodation.
Other partnerships include a bakery and painting and decorating training. Prison radio provides opportunities for programming made for and by people in custody.
Role and background
Prisoners can study English, maths and writing, as well as work-related subjects such as customer service, retail, business and cleaning. Roles within the prison provide further opportunities to gain experience.
Visiting and family contact
New arrivals receive an induction explaining prison rules, welfare support and arrangements for calls and visits. A multi-faith chaplaincy supports people with different religious needs.
Family services offer help with maintaining or rebuilding relationships. Visitors must check current booking and identification requirements before travelling, while release preparation can include help with finding somewhere to live.
Practical advice before you make arrangements
Use Brixton's official page below for its current booking route, required identification, permitted items and travel instructions.
Confirm that the person is still at Brixton and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
