Inside the prison and daily life
Buckley Hall is a men's prison in Rochdale, Greater Manchester. Its four residential units contain single and shared cells, with communal areas and telephones supporting day-to-day life inside.
Prisoners can study English, maths, computing, art and textiles. Vocational courses include property maintenance, shop fitting, plastering, bricklaying, carpentry, catering and industrial cleaning.
Three prison-run workshops provide a more industrial form of work. Their activities include recycling electrical equipment, repackaging clothing for a retailer and manufacturing prison workwear.
These roles sit alongside academic learning and practical training. The intended connection is between activity during custody and skills that can help prisoners find work after release.
Visiting and family contact
New arrivals receive an induction covering welfare, rules, education and family contact. Exercise facilities include a gym and sports hall, while chaplaincy services support prisoners of different faiths.
Family and friends must follow the visit booking and identification rules. Current arrangements should be confirmed before travelling, and support services can help relatives understand the process.
Role and background
Some prisoners may qualify for release on temporary licence to gain community work experience and prepare for release. Applications are assessed within the prison.
