Inside the prison and daily life
Channings Wood is a men's prison near Newton Abbot in Devon. Education, vocational learning and industrial work form central parts of its stated regime.
The prison has four large industrial workshops. Prisoners can also take on domestic roles or study towards qualifications, with accredited offending behaviour programmes available alongside practical activity.
Accommodation includes cells with a toilet, basin and telephone. A gym and sports hall provide exercise facilities, while a chapel and separate multi-faith room support religious services and meetings.
New arrivals go through an induction lasting about three weeks. This covers welfare, health, education and training, together with prison rules and the arrangements for maintaining contact with family.
Visiting and family contact
Resettlement services offer help with housing, debt and finding employment. Some prisoners may qualify for temporary release to gain community work experience, prepare for release or maintain family contact.
Family and friends should confirm the latest visiting instructions before travelling, including approval, booking, identification and permitted belongings.
Role and background
Those opportunities depend on eligibility and assessment. They do not remove the requirement to follow the conditions of custody.
