Inside the prison and daily life
Chelmsford is a prison and young offender institution in Essex for men aged 18 and over. Prisoners live in single and shared cells and have access to a gym and library.
Education includes English, maths, computing, retail, art and English for speakers of other languages. Vocational courses cover roofing, construction skills, traffic management, health and safety and other practical subjects.
Work opportunities include laundry, recycling, packing, catering, gardening and cleaning. Prisoners can also take on wing jobs or peer support roles, while orderly positions operate in areas including reception, healthcare and the gym.
Resettlement work brings together probation, employment services and prison staff. Pre-release clinics connect prisoners with organisations that can continue providing support after custody.
Chelmsford does not offer release on temporary licence. Prisoners who need that form of progression may require transfer to an appropriate training prison, subject to their circumstances and sentence.
Visiting and family contact
Family support is available through the prison's partner services. Visits must be approved and booked under the current rules.
Relatives should confirm identification requirements and entry arrangements before travelling, particularly when relying on information saved from an earlier visit.
Practical advice before you make arrangements
Use Chelmsford's official page below for its current booking route, required identification, permitted items and travel instructions.
Confirm that the person is still at Chelmsford and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
