Inside the prison and daily life

Downview is a prison and young offender institution for women aged 18 and over in Sutton, Surrey. Each prisoner has her own cell, with residential wings serving different purposes.

Education includes English, maths and computing alongside hairdressing, beauty and catering. The courses provide academic and vocational routes through the learning available during custody.

Partnerships with the London College of Fashion, a photographic printing academy and the Clink charity add specialist work experience. Their purpose is to connect training inside the prison with opportunities for employment after release.

Role and background

Prisoners can gain experience in the community through release on temporary licence. That provision forms part of preparation for life outside custody and remains subject to the relevant assessment and conditions.

Visiting and family contact

New arrivals receive an induction covering welfare, rules, property allowances and family contact. Peer support is available, including assistance for people who have difficulty understanding English.

Exercise facilities include a gym and an artificial-turf football pitch. Family services provide support and guidance to relatives and friends.

Visits must be arranged under the prison's current procedures. Approval, booking and identification requirements should be checked before travelling.
