Inside the prison and daily life
Elmley is one of three prisons on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. Its six residential units include provision for new arrivals and prisoners with different support needs.
Prisoners are expected to work towards Level 2 English and maths. Classroom assistants provide learning support, while computing, construction qualifications and other industry-related subjects broaden the programme.
Music offers another route into learning. The prison's record-label project gives participants opportunities to play, create, mix and manage music.
Work includes gardening, recycling, laundry, cleaning, environmental services and kitchen duties. Gym-based courses cover subjects such as first aid, nutrition and personal training, and prisoners can train for peer-support roles.
Careers advice helps with CVs and applications. Employer events provide opportunities to discuss vacancies, apprenticeships and training with people nearing release.
Resettlement services can also help with accommodation, banking and identity documents. Elmley does not routinely offer temporary release.
Visiting and family contact
Family services support visitors and can refer relatives to other agencies. Anyone planning a visit should confirm approval, booking, identification and current entry arrangements before travelling.
Practical advice before you make arrangements
Use Elmley's official page below for its current booking route, required identification, permitted items and travel instructions.
Confirm that the person is still at Elmley and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
