Inside the prison and daily life
Exeter is a men's prison in the centre of the Devon city. Its residential accommodation includes single and shared cells, with units serving different purposes and support needs.
The site has provision for new arrivals, vulnerable prisoners, enhanced-status prisoners and social care. Exercise and support facilities include a gym, sports hall, library, healthcare team and chapel.
After induction, prisoners can take part in education and employment. Courses include English, maths, computing, art, employability, horticulture, painting and decorating and peer mentoring.
Further learning covers personal development, social skills, gym instruction and English for speakers of other languages. Reading support is also available.
Work opportunities include light assembly, packing and textiles. Model train assembly and painting provide an example of the more specialised tasks carried out through prison employment.
Role and background
Some prisoners may qualify for release on temporary licence to gain work experience in the community and prepare for release. Eligibility and permission are assessed within the prison.
Visiting and family contact
Families can use the prison's contact and visit arrangements to stay in touch. Before travelling, visitors should confirm the booking process, required identification and current rules governing entry and belongings.
Practical advice before you make arrangements
Use Exeter's official page below for its current booking route, required identification, permitted items and travel instructions.
Confirm that the person is still at Exeter and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
