Inside the prison and daily life
Featherstone is a men's prison in the village of Featherstone, near Wolverhampton. Accommodation is organised across seven house units, with single and shared cells.
Every new prisoner is allocated a key worker. That officer provides a point of contact during the sentence, alongside the prison's education and support services.
Vocational courses include hospitality, painting and decorating, bricklaying and cleaning. Specialist qualifications are also available in rail-track work, motor vehicle skills and tyre fitting.
Industrial workshops provide further employment in areas such as construction, textiles and printing. A gym and library offer additional facilities beyond the residential units.
Visiting and family contact
New arrivals spend time in the first-night centre, where cells have telephones. Welfare checks continue during the first day, followed by an induction covering health, rules, education and family contact.
Family services provide guidance and support to relatives and friends. Visits require approval and booking, with identification and security rules applying at entry.
Role and background
Academic study includes English, maths and computing. Higher-level qualifications can be pursued through the Open University.
Anyone arranging a journey should confirm current requirements directly before travelling.
