Inside the prison and daily life
Full Sutton is a high-security men's prison in the village of Full Sutton, near York. Its residential wings and specialist units provide individual cells for prisoners.
The prison offers learning and work across a range of settings. Industrial activity includes textiles, lighting assembly, printing, woodwork, furniture restoration and distribution.
Gym access and other activities are available by request and subject to approval. Privileges, including television access, depend on the relevant behaviour level.
A week-long induction introduces new arrivals to rules, welfare services, education and contact arrangements. If a prisoner cannot make an initial family call, staff can contact a relative on his behalf.
Role and background
Other jobs include bicycle repairs for charities, catering, cleaning, waste management and orderly duties. These roles give prisoners different ways to take part in the working life of the establishment.
Visiting and family contact
Family support staff provide information and guidance through the visitors centre. Relatives should confirm current approval, booking and identification requirements before travelling.
Full Sutton's high-security role should not be confused with another prison simply because it is nearby. Each establishment has its own population, regime and visiting arrangements.
