Role and background

HMP Haverigg is an open men's prison near Millom in Cumbria.

Inside the prison and daily life

Its residential accommodation provides individual rooms with toilet facilities, and many have their own showers. The prison also has a library, an IT training centre, a gym and teams supporting faith, safety and equalities.

Prisoners work or train full time. Training is intended to reflect gaps in the employment market, with options including timber manufacturing, building, plastering, plumbing, cleaning and agriculture. Gym-based learning can also lead to leisure-industry qualifications.

Support for family members is provided through Partners of Prisoners. The prison also has dedicated safety and equalities teams, recognising that daily needs extend beyond a work or classroom timetable.

Being an open prison gives Haverigg a particular resettlement role. Suitable men may be assessed for temporary release for work experience, education and preparation for leaving custody. Assessment remains important: an open setting does not mean that every prisoner can leave whenever they choose.

Visiting and family contact

Families should check visiting times, booking procedures, identification rules and support for children or disabled visitors before travelling. Those details can change. Understanding the establishment's role is useful, but it does not replace confirming the arrangements for a particular visit.

Practical advice before you make arrangements

Use Haverigg's official page below for its current booking route, required identification, permitted items and travel instructions.

Confirm that the person is still at Haverigg and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.

Community work or temporary release depends on individual approval and risk assessment; the establishment's open or community setting does not remove custody rules.
