Role and background
HMP Hewell is a men's prison in Tardebigge, near Redditch in Worcestershire.
The early days include an opportunity to contact family and speak about immediate health needs. That introduction matters in a large prison where new arrivals must learn unfamiliar routines quickly.
Inside the prison and daily life
The establishment's residential accommodation is arranged in six houseblocks. There is a library, a gym and a multi-faith chaplaincy. An induction introduces healthcare, safety, personal development and the practical rules of prison life.
Education includes English, maths, painting and decorating, and tiling. Prison work spans a bicycle workshop, double glazing, kitchens, laundry, recycling, refuse collection, cleaning and maintenance. Some activities combine practical work with accredited learning.
Visiting and family contact
The range of jobs illustrates how a large establishment can provide both services it needs each day and skills that may transfer into employment. Family support is also part of the provision, with Pact offering information and help to relatives and friends.
Family contact is another part of the picture. Before travelling, relatives should confirm current booking arrangements, identification requirements, accessibility support and rules on permitted items. Timetables and available services can change, so an overview should be used alongside up-to-date visiting information.
Practical advice before you make arrangements

Confirm that the person is still at Hewell and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
