Role and background
HMP Lindholme is an adult men's prison near Doncaster in South Yorkshire.
Inside the prison and daily life
Its ten residential units provide a mixture of single and double cells, alongside a separate care-and-separation facility. The different units support the prison's residential population.
Each prisoner has an individual learning plan. Courses range from literacy, numeracy and English-language learning to GCSE subjects, IT, business administration, media and graphic design. Practical training includes plumbing, carpentry, engineering, textiles, catering, cleaning and decorating.
The learning offer also includes building computers and starting a business. These sit alongside traditional trades, providing routes for prisoners whose interests and abilities extend beyond the same small set of jobs.
The variety of courses is intended to support employment after release. Family learning and other life-skills work add to vocational study, while housing advice is also available through partner organisations. An effective route through such a broad offer depends on matching a person's abilities, goals and circumstances to the next useful stage.
Visiting and family contact
For relatives, practical preparation matters. Confirm the correct visiting arrangements, accepted identification, accessibility support and property rules before making a journey. Keeping contact with someone in custody can involve several services, and each has its own procedures.
