Role and background

HMP Millsike is a privately operated men's prison at Full Sutton, near York, run by Mitie.

Inside the prison and daily life

The Category C resettlement prison was designed for 1,468 places and runs entirely on electricity. It is a separate establishment from neighbouring Full Sutton Prison, despite sharing the village location.

PeoplePlus provides education and vocational training, with resettlement work intended to connect learning to employment. Health, chaplaincy, sport and fitness are also part of the provision. The Forward Trust supports work with prisoners and their families.

Millsike's design and operating model put particular emphasis on preparation for release. New buildings and technology can create opportunities, but the purpose of a resettlement prison is ultimately practical: helping men develop the skills, routines and support needed for life in the community. Those ambitions should be distinguished from measured outcomes.

Visiting and family contact

Visitors are supported through a dedicated reception process, with arrangements for children and people needing additional assistance. Confirming those arrangements in advance helps families prepare for the security procedures involved.

Family contact is another part of the picture. Before travelling, relatives should confirm current booking arrangements, identification requirements, accessibility support and rules on permitted items. Timetables and available services can change, so an overview should be used alongside up-to-date visiting information.

Confirm that the person is still at Millsike and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
