Role and background
HMP Moorland is a prison and young offender institution near Doncaster for men aged 18 and over.
Inside the prison and daily life
Its seven residential units contain mostly single cells. The site has weights and cardiovascular gyms, a remedial exercise area, sports hall and an outdoor football field. Fitness courses can lead to vocational qualifications.
Work and training cover gardens, furniture and television repair, cleaning, kitchens, lighting, tailoring, joinery, recycling and Braille. Education includes English, maths, computing, bricklaying, art, hospitality and horticulture.
Some physical-education courses can lead to qualifications in personal training, cycling, healthy living and first aid. These widen the vocational options beyond the prison's industrial and construction-related activities. These require structured learning.
Behaviour programmes address thinking skills, anger management and recovery, with peer support also available. Family relationships and personal responsibility are included in other learning. Applications for temporary release are individually risk-assessed, connecting possible community opportunities with the prisoner's circumstances rather than offering automatic access.
Visiting and family contact
For relatives, practical preparation matters. Confirm the correct visiting arrangements, accepted identification, accessibility support and property rules before making a journey. Keeping contact with someone in custody can involve several services, and each has its own procedures.
Practical advice before you make arrangements
Use Moorland's official page below for its current booking route, required identification, permitted items and travel instructions.
Confirm that the person is still at Moorland and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
