Role and background

HMP Morton Hall is a Category C men's prison in Swinderby, near Lincoln.

Its role is to accommodate adult men in the later part of their sentence, with the public description referring to 353 places and men with between three and thirty-three months left to serve. There is also a care-and-separation unit.

Inside the prison and daily life

The induction covers healthcare, safety, activities and practical arrangements. Education includes English, maths, IT and English for speakers of other languages. Work-related learning spans manufacturing, horticulture, barbering, hospitality, bricklaying, cleaning, peer mentoring and recycling.

New arrivals can make a short free telephone call to a relative or friend. Healthcare checks and a seven-day induction provide an opportunity to identify immediate needs before the ordinary regime begins.

Language support is available through interpreting services. Morton Hall's short remaining-sentence range makes timely preparation especially relevant: skills, understandable information and plans for the next stage all have to fit within a limited period in custody.

Visiting and family contact

Families should check visiting times, booking procedures, identification rules and support for children or disabled visitors before travelling. Those details can change. Understanding the establishment's role is useful, but it does not replace confirming the arrangements for a particular visit.
