Role and background
HMP New Hall is a prison and young offender institution in Flockton, West Yorkshire, for women aged 18 and over.
Inside the prison and daily life
Its seven houses include a first-night centre in Poplar House and a mother-and-baby unit in Maple House. The houses have different functions within the establishment.
Education and training cover functional skills, contact-centre work, IT, business administration, hairdressing, cleaning, employability, horticulture and first aid. Gym-instructor training provides another route into qualifications.
The mother-and-baby unit is specialist accommodation with a different purpose from the first-night centre. Keeping those functions distinct helps explain how support can vary within the same women's establishment.
Four workshops offer vocational opportunities, including food preparation and photo processing. Programmes also address offending behaviour. New Hall's combination of ordinary residential units and specialist mother-and-baby provision illustrates why women's prisons need to support different circumstances within the same establishment.
Visiting and family contact
Family contact is another part of the picture. Before travelling, relatives should confirm current booking arrangements, identification requirements, accessibility support and rules on permitted items. Timetables and available services can change, so an overview should be used alongside up-to-date visiting information.
