Onley

Role and background

HMP Onley is a men's prison near Rugby.

Inside the prison and daily life

Its eleven wings include first-night, resettlement and recovery provision. Accommodation contains single and double cells, with toilets, sinks and in-cell phones. A library supports reading, learning and independent study.

Education includes literacy, numeracy and IT, with distance learning available. Practical training spans catering, forklift driving, gardening, cleaning, bicycle work, carpentry, decorating, barbering and recycling. Peer reading support is provided through the Shannon Trust.

The library provides evening learning support as well as daytime access. Reading mentors can help men build confidence, while distance study gives other prisoners a route to continue education at a higher level.

Employer partnerships and resettlement advice are intended to connect prison activity with work and housing after release. Onley's published information states that it does not currently operate temporary release. That makes the links built inside the prison, and the planning for eventual discharge, especially relevant to understanding its rehabilitative role.

Visiting and family contact

Family contact is another part of the picture. Before travelling, relatives should confirm current booking arrangements, identification requirements, accessibility support and rules on permitted items. Timetables and available services can change, so an overview should be used alongside up-to-date visiting information.
