Role and background

HMP Pentonville is a men's prison and young offender institution in Islington, north London.

Inside the prison and daily life

Its seven wings contain single and shared cells. The wings form the main residential estate. Four gym areas and a multi-faith chaplaincy provide activity and personal support alongside the accommodation.

Education covers literacy, numeracy and language skills, together with work-related subjects such as business, IT, journalism, carpentry, decorating, cleaning, barbering, radio production and food safety.

Domestic jobs are another part of the work offer, helping the establishment operate each day. Formal courses and workshop roles therefore sit alongside the cleaning, catering and other services required by a large prison.

Textiles and recycling workshops provide work, while other jobs include catering, cleaning and orderly duties. Support around gang involvement is also available through a partner organisation. Pentonville's range of provision shows the different tasks carried out within a large urban prison, from basic education to managing immediate needs and planning for a person's next stage.

Visiting and family contact

Families should check visiting times, booking procedures, identification rules and support for children or disabled visitors before travelling. Those details can change. Understanding the establishment's role is useful, but it does not replace confirming the arrangements for a particular visit.
