Inside the prison and daily life

Risley is a men's prison near Warrington in Cheshire. Its residential accommodation is largely made up of single cells, and in-cell telephones provide a route for maintaining approved contact outside the prison. A multi-faith chaplaincy supports prisoners with different beliefs and needs.

The education programme includes English, maths, English for speakers of other languages, construction and upcycling. Higher study can be pursued through distance learning, including the Open University and support from the Prisoners' Education Trust. The range is intended to meet people at different starting points, from basic skills to more advanced learning.

Workshops cover textiles, bicycle maintenance, desktop publishing, electrical repair, waste management, gardens and laundry. Alongside practical tasks, the stated focus includes reliability, teamwork, organisation and solving problems: habits that employers can value as well as a qualification.

Visiting and family contact

New arrivals receive a four-day induction explaining support, prison rules, health services and contact arrangements. Family services are provided by Partners of Prisoners, commonly known as POPS. Visits and approved telephone contact are separate parts of keeping family relationships going during custody.

Anyone arranging a visit should check the latest booking rules, identification requirements and accessibility arrangements before travelling. Education and work described here are provision offered, rather than a guarantee of individual access or outcomes.
