Inside the prison and daily life
Spring Hill is a men's open prison at Grendon Underwood in Buckinghamshire. It shares management with neighbouring Grendon Prison, but its open-prison role is different. The emphasis is on preparing men for release through work, training, accommodation planning and increasing responsibility.
Most prisoners share accommodation. Facilities include a gym, sports field, library and chaplaincy. Learning opportunities include carpentry, plumbing, horticulture, kitchen services, IT and customer service. University and distance-learning options are also described, alongside specialist preparation for work in information and communications technology.
Work can take place within the prison in areas such as kitchens, farms and gardens, sometimes with qualifications attached. Community placements and employment outside the prison are another part of its resettlement approach. These can begin with voluntary activity and progress towards paid work.
Temporary release requires assessment and can support work experience, community activity and preparation for life outside custody. Open conditions therefore involve managed progression rather than unrestricted movement. The important issue is how a person's sentence plan, practical skills and arrangements for release fit together.
Visiting and family contact
Anyone arranging a visit should check the latest booking rules, identification requirements and accessibility arrangements before travelling. Education and work described here are provision offered, rather than a guarantee of individual access or outcomes.
Practical advice before you make arrangements
Use Spring Hill's official page below for its current booking route, required identification, permitted items and travel instructions.
Confirm that the person is still at Spring Hill and that your visit has been accepted before making travel arrangements. Ask the prison in advance about disability access, medication or children's needs.
Community work or temporary release depends on individual approval and risk assessment; the establishment's open or community setting does not remove custody rules.
