Stafford

Inside the prison and daily life

Stafford Prison stands in the centre of Stafford and holds men convicted of sexual offences. Its accommodation is arranged across seven wings, with many prisoners sharing cells. A multi-faith chaplaincy, sports hall, fitness facilities and outdoor pitch are among the services and facilities described for the site.

Learning ranges from English and maths to distance study with the Open University. Vocational subjects include bricklaying, carpentry, industrial cleaning, painting and decorating, and plastering. That combination allows a prison to address basic education needs while also offering routes towards a trade.

Work is available in everyday prison services, including catering and laundry. Industrial workshops fulfil outside contracts, while textile and tailoring workshops make items for the prison service. Some work provides opportunities to gain qualifications as well as experience of a regular routine.

Stafford also runs accredited offending behaviour programmes. Reading support and library activities form another part of its educational provision. New arrivals receive an induction explaining health services, support, rules and maintaining contact, which is an important starting point for understanding life in custody.

Visiting and family contact

Anyone arranging a visit should check the latest booking rules, identification requirements and accessibility arrangements before travelling. Education and work described here are provision offered, rather than a guarantee of individual access or outcomes.
