Stocken

Inside the prison and daily life

Stocken is a men's prison near Oakham in Rutland. Its residential units include arrangements focused on induction, recovery, neurodiversity and wellbeing, engagement and longer sentences. These are intended to respond to different needs within the prison population rather than provide one identical environment for everyone.

Education and employment can be full-time or part-time. Vocational subjects include catering, bicycle maintenance, painting and decorating, bricklaying, plumbing, tiling, barbering and motor mechanics. Gym-related qualifications provide another route into structured learning.

Workshops cover areas including retail and warehousing, electrical repair, engineering, assembly, recycling and gardening. Such work can build practical ability and familiarity with a regular working routine. The prison also offers accredited offending behaviour courses and psychological support.

Visiting and family contact

Induction introduces new arrivals to prison rules, health services, learning and family contact. Peer support networks and an equalities team are part of the described provision. Family services and family days help support relationships outside custody. Understanding Stocken therefore involves both its training opportunities and the different support needs its units are intended to meet.

Anyone arranging a visit should check the latest booking rules, identification requirements and accessibility arrangements before travelling. Education and work described here are provision offered, rather than a guarantee of individual access or outcomes.
