Inside the prison and daily life

Styal is a prison and young offender institution for women aged 18 and over in Wilmslow, Cheshire. Accommodation combines dormitories and individual cells. It also has a specialist mother and baby unit for women with babies up to 18 months, run with Action for Children.

New arrivals initially stay in a first-night centre. Early support includes contact with healthcare, mental health staff, chaplaincy and a domestic abuse support worker. This makes the first days about identifying needs as well as explaining prison rules and routines.

Education includes English, maths, digital skills, construction, horticulture, hairdressing and beauty, fitness, hospitality and catering. Mothers in the specialist unit can access programmes supporting their child's development, with a crèche enabling participation in other classes. A library supports study and reading.

Peer mentors provide advice, signpost support and help with reading activities. Some women may be considered for temporary release or childcare resettlement, subject to criteria and risk assessment. Styal's role therefore brings together custody, learning, support for women with complex needs and the practical work of maintaining family relationships.
