Inside the prison and daily life
The Verne is a men's prison on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, holding men convicted of sexual offences. Accommodation is arranged across six units, with common rooms and dining areas. Prisoners have keys to their own cells, while the prison remains a controlled custodial environment.
A library offers books in several languages, magazines and newspapers. A gym and sports programme provide other structured activities. Education is delivered through a full programme with opportunities for Open University distance study, allowing learning to extend beyond basic classroom qualifications.
Work is available in kitchens, gardens, recycling, barbering and supporting the residential units. Prisoners can take peer support roles or work in the woodmill assembling furniture. Contract workshops include preparing breakfast packs for other prisons, repairing televisions and producing leather goods used in the prison system.
These everyday details help explain what the establishment is intended to do beyond its location and walls. Family services are provided by PACT. New arrivals receive an induction covering health, support, rules and contact arrangements, helping them understand how to access the services available during custody.
